From our first clothing collection drive to structured Enterprise Development cohorts — here is a record of what we will build together.
Community Clothing Drive
Our first large-scale community clothing drive mobilised churches, households, and local businesses in East Lynne to donate clean, usable clothing and shoes. The drive ran over a three-week collection period, with six designated drop-off points across the neighbourhood.
Donated items were sorted, cleaned, and categorised on-site by a volunteer team and our first cohort of programme participants. A portion was distributed directly to families identified through community referrals, while the remainder was processed for affordable resale and training purposes.
Programme Expansion
Following the success of our East Lynne work, Hope Ascending NPC extended its reach into Eersterus — a neighbouring community with significant need and strong existing church networks. Working with local pastors and community leaders, we established collection points and began our first structured processing operation in the area.
This expansion marked the beginning of our multi-community model, where each neighbourhood is served through its own set of trusted community partners while benefiting from the shared infrastructure of the broader programme.
Enterprise Development Pilot
In 2024, Hope Ascending NPC launched its first structured Enterprise Development cohort in Mamelodi. Participants — recruited from the local community — went through a practical, hands-on internship covering sorting and grading, washing and preparation, mending and alterations, retail pricing, stock management, and customer service.
The cohort was designed not as a once-off workshop but as a sustained, immersive experience in running a real community retail operation. Graduates were equipped with documented work experience, a reference letter, and a pathway toward operating a micro-enterprise or securing meaningful employment.
Alongside our flagship projects, Hope Ascending NPC has delivered a range of community-focused initiatives and internal development milestones.
Hope Ascending NPC was formally registered as a Non-Profit Company (Reg. 2022/458864/08), establishing the legal foundation for all subsequent operations and funding eligibility.
Hope Ascending NPC received its Public Benefit Organisation registration (PBO 930080012), enabling donors to receive Section 18A tax certificates for qualifying contributions.
Established the first permanent sorting and storage infrastructure — a dedicated space for receiving, sorting, and processing donated clothing in a structured, dignified environment.
Launched a scheduled mobile collection service across Mamelodi, coordinating vehicle-based pick-ups from partner churches and high-density donation points across the township.
Implemented a structured token exchange system allowing community members to contribute volunteer labour in exchange for access to clothing, reinforcing dignity and mutual participation rather than passive charity.
Invested significantly in operational systems, volunteer training, partner onboarding documentation, and digital infrastructure to support the next phase of community and programme growth.
